Our 2007 Waikiki Holiday

HGKDuke
This is Kathy and me at the start of our 2007 holiday in Waikiki at the statue of Duke Kahanamoku who is reputed to be the originator of  modern day surfing.  There is a webcam focussed on this site which we were informed of just before our trip so we had emailed friends and relatives to watch for us waving on the morning after we arrived at midnight on January 22nd.

Me at the same place - our favourite bar on Waikiki.

HWHippie.jpg
This is the umbrella, surf boards and snorkel gear that an old hippie type beach bum brought to the beach in front of the Sheraton Moana beach bar every day.  Each day he would elaborately carry this stuff down to the beach and set up his camp area, then disappear for hours at end.  Never did determine what he did all day but it sure wasn't surfing or snorkelling!!

I took this picture of Diamond Head to the left and Waikiki in front from a ridge top north of Waikiki that I rode up to on a scooter that I rented for $30 for the day.

HHotelSt.jpg
This is Hotel Street in Honolulu which used to be where all the action was.  I stopped in this bar for a non-alcoholic beer.

HDillingham.jpg
This is Dillingham Airport and the tow plane and glider plane which I paid $134 US to go up in for 30 minutes but which only lasted 20 minutes due to lack of favourable winds for lift off the mountains in the background.  It was fun anyway.

This is the glider pilot's head in front of me with the two plane ahead.  We were towed up to 3,000 feet above sea level in an effort to prolong the flight.  There was a fair bit of cumulus cloud as we got higher as you can see.

The view from 3000 feet up was quite spectacular.  This is a view of the south side of the northwest tip of Oahu.

HDillinghamAirport.jpg
This is an aerial view of Dillingham Airport which the pilot told me was constructed in 1942 the year after Japan attacked Hawaii so this airport was not involved in the December 7th, 1941 bombing raids.  I asked the pilot if he would let me fly the plane which he did and I flew the plane down to the runway from here.  It was great fun and seemed quite easy to fly although I guess it takes some training and skill to be able to find the lifting air currents.

This is a surfer near Turtle Bay on the north shore of Oahu using a parasail to tow him parallel to the waves at quite a speed.

This is Kathy with Tannis, the daughter of my second cousin, Hugh Forbes.  Tannis was so entralled with the webcam view of the beach scene at the statue of Duke Kahanamoku that she hopped a plane to join us in Waikiki.

This was the view showing the Sheraton Moana Hotel and beach from Tannis' hotel room in the Waikiki Beachcomber.

This was another view looking south from Tannis' hotel balconey.
